Functieomschrijving

Are you looking for a challenging, but rewarding job in a dynamic setting? The Integrative Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience (IMCN) Research Group within the Brain & Cognition department at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a postdoctoral researcher on the topic of decision-making mechanisms of deep brain networks.

The IMCN Research Group aims to bridge the gap between neuroscience and cognition. Members of the IMCN have a range of skills from neuroanatomy and neurochemistry, to mathematical psychological modelling.

What are you going to do

The research will focus on mathematical modelling of cognitive processes that underpin decision making, ranging across cognitive, motor and limbic domains. Further, the research should aim to link such process models to specific subcortical structures, through collaboration with fellow researchers.

You will/tasks:
  • Develop new behavioral models of cognition
  • Create joint models of multiple tasks and across multiple modalities
  • You will supervise BA and MA students within the Brain & Cognition department including some teaching

Functie-eisen

The researcher will develop modelling codes to fit such models to both behavioural and neural data, and will have primary responsibility for at least one specific field of interest. The researcher will contribute to other theoretical components of the project, including the analysis of results, development of new ideas, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. The researcher will be also involved in assisting with supervision of graduate students.

Your experience and profile:
  • A PhD in cognitive sciences, mathematical psychology or similar;
  • A strong record of computer programming, specifically in process modelling;
  • Working knowledge of mathematical psychology, cognitive psychology and ethical experimental practise;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic life and, administrative tasks;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of an effective team.
Modelling of evidence accumulation models or joint-modelling techniques is desirable but not essential.

About the faculty/institute

In our research unit, we use an integrative model-based cognitive neuroscience approach to gain a mechanistic understanding of cognitive processes such as decision-making and how they are implemented in the brain. We combine knowledge from functional and structural neuroanatomy, mathematical/computational modeling, and the cognitive/clinical neurosciences. See http://www.birteforstmann.com/ for more details.
