The mission of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences is to be an internationally recognized research institute, performing cutting-edge chemical research in four key research areas:
•Synthetic Chemistry & Catalysis
•Molecular Pharmaceutical Sciences
•Analytical Chemistry & Spectroscopy
The department has an outstanding research infrastructure and environment for talented scientists and students to achieve the highest possible standards in both research and teaching. The department also recognizes its role in society and maintains effective collaborations with for-profit and non-profit partners to valorize its academic resources.
The Synthetic & Bio-Organic Chemistry group (www.syborch.com) has an excellent reputation for the development of efficient and robust methodology for the synthesis of complex, medicinally relevant small molecules. This project involves the development of novel cascade reactions for the stereoselective construction of complex cage-like molecules. These reactions will then be used in the total synthesis of selected alkaloid natural products of high biological relevance.
The candidate will develop new stereoselective cascade reactions, study their mechanisms (possibly in collaboration with theoretical chemists at the VU), and employ them in the synthesis of natural products and analogs which will be evaluated for bioactivity. The candidate is expected to manage a small research team of BSc and MSc students, and present the project results at scientific conferences and in scientific publications.
We are looking for a candidate with a MSc degree (or equivalent) in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or a related field, excellent practical skills and knowledge of organic chemistry, and excellent command of written and spoken English; interest in DFT calculations is an advantage.
The initial appointment will be for a period of one year, extendable up to four years upon a positive evaluation.
You can find information about our excellent fringe benefits of employment at www.workingatvu.nl like:
• remuneration of 8,3% end-of-year bonus and 8% holiday allowance
• solid pension scheme (ABP);
• generous contribution commuting allowance based on public transport;
• a wide range of sports facilities which staff may use at a modest charge.
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and amounts € 2222,00 gross per month in the first year up to € 2840,00 in the fourth year (salary scale 85) based on full-time employment.
