Within the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis (CSA) we offer a position in Crop Systems Biology at the assistant professor level. The position will include teaching (45%), research (45%) and general management tasks and service to society (10%). The teaching will be in the area of crop science and crop physiology and will be at the level of BSc, MSc and PhD students. Supervision of PhD candidates is also a major part of the job. The candidate will develop, in consultation and collaboration with the other team members, her/his own research line that matches the long term strategy of both the Crop physiology team and the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis. An integrated approach including a combination of experimentation and modelling will be required. Activities include writing research proposals for external funding.
We seek a highly motivated plant/crop physiologist or agronomist, with an interest in omics approaches. The focus of the research is: (I) furthering the knowledge on ecophysiology of crops under diverse environmental and management conditions, (II) integration of this knowledge in quantitative crop models and linking with genetic markers. The candidate's research focus should be complementary to ongoing research in Crop Systems Biology and involve collaboration with public and private partners, both in the temperate and (semi-)tropical regions. For example, we have a world-wide network with CGIAR institutions, universities, NARS and private companies in all continents.
We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:
You should have a strong track record in research, to be demonstrated by work done in PhD and postdoc positions. You are a motivating teacher with proven experience. You have demonstrated to be successful in obtaining research grants in competitive funding schemes to fund your own research. You are a team player and team builder with a keen interest in collaborative research and willing to contribute to the general tasks of the chair group. You have the capabilities and ambition to become (personal) professor.
You will strengthen our research capacity in the knowledge chain from lower integration levels (e.g. genetics, molecular plant physiology, metabolomics, molecular biology), via physiology at the crop level to crop ecology. These fields currently generate large data sets now available in databases at low integration levels and potentially allow identification of novel physiological mechanisms of crop performance under current and future climatic conditions.
- A PhD in the area of plant/crop physiology or agronomy
- Proven affinity to and experience in teaching
- Highly developed interpersonal and intercultural skills
- A strong publication record in top quality journals
- Well-developed experimental and modelling skills
- Experience in acquiring and managing externally-funded research projects

ConditionsWe offer a challenging position. Evaluation on job performance is every 3/4 years, and a positive outcome will lead to a permanent position after 7 years. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive salary from a minimum of €3637,- to a maximum of € 4978,- for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale 11). The position is available at the level of Assistant Professor, although employment as Associate Professor may be possible in case of exceptional suitability. In both cases, the candidate will enter WUR's tenure-track program. You will enter a career trajectory, with an excellent environment for you to grow, excel and work within the department to make a difference in our field. Successful evaluation will allow growing towards a Professor holding a Personal Chair. This includes the chance to define your own research line and develop your own research group. We offer training and coaching, as well as opportunities to work part-time.
