The Environmental Economics and Natural Resouce Group (ENR) at Wageningen University and Research (WUR) is part of the Section Economics of the Department of Social Sciences. It is affiliated with two graduate schools, the Wageningen School of Social Sciences (WASS) and the Wageningen Institute for Environmental and Climate Research (WIMEK).

The Groups vision is to become a top team in Europe applying the concepts and principles of environmental and natural resource economics for the construction of sustainable, circular, low-carbon and climate resilient production and consumption systems.

In terms of education, the ENR team has three flagship education themes, namely:
  1. economics of Climate Change;
  2. economics of Socio-Ecological Systems;
  3. microeconomics applied to human-environment interactions.
In terms of research, the thematic focus of the ENR chair group is:
  • the economics of energy transitions, climate policy and the cost of action/inaction:
    • cost and benefits of decoupling economic growth from fossil fuel energy;
    • international climate policy designs: carbon taxes and similar mitigation policies;
    • food security under climate change;
    • role of discounting in the social cost-benefit analysis of policies towards a low-carbon economy.
  • the role of behavioural and economic policy instruments in the transition to sustainable and healthy production and consumption:
    • behavioural economics, and technology uptake under alternative choice infrastructures;
    • designing effective economic policy interventions towards happier, healthier and more sustainable societies.
  • the economics of resilient and sustainable social-ecological systems:
    • economic drivers affecting social-ecological systems: unravelling the institutional factors that contribute to sustainable use or overexploitation;
    • assessing and evaluating the trade-offs between resilience, and socio-economic goals of key socio-ecological systems.
In this challenging career trajectory:
  • you conduct research that contributes to finding solutions to societal or scientific problems, and suitable for publication in high quality top general science, top field and general economics journals;
  • you contribute to education in environmental economics through lectures, tutorials, and supervision of BSc and MSc theses;
  • you participate in processes to increase the quality of our education;
  • you participate in national and international academic networks, and national and international debates;
  • you assume a central role in the preparation of grant proposals;
  • you successfully supervise PhD students. Progress will be measured at both individual and ENR Group level. At the individual level, there will be a strong recognition of diversity in career paths.
The ENR chair group seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of environment and development economics. Tenure Track is a career path for hardworking scientists who pursue to excel in education and research. We seek to attract scientific talent and to stimulate and support their development.


The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in economics with a focus, or at least a strong interest on environmental issues. We have a preference for strong quantitative empirical skills (e.g. spatial econometrics, analysis of cross sectional data, design and analysis of experimental data). Previous work on behavioural economics, social-ecological systems, energy or climate policy design is a plus.

In summary, we search for:

  • a PhD in economics, preferably with strong empirical quantitative skills;
  • affinity with and experience in environmental and natural resource economics is appreciated;
  • a good track-record of writing papers that can lead to good publications;
  • experience in empirical research;
  • a strong team player willing to contribute to the wider interests of the group;
  • willingness to write research proposals, proven experience is even better;
  • experience in teaching and supervision of MSc / BSc students.

We are a dynamic chair group with a clear strategy and a good balance between research and education. We initially offer a fixed-term, 7 year contract which, upon positive evaluation based on criteria elaborated in the University's Tenure Track policy, can lead to a permanent employment contract as professor. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive salary from a minimum of €3.746,- to a maximum of €5.127,- for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Wageningen University (scale 11).
In addition, we offer:
  • 8% holiday allowance;
  • a structural end-of year bonus of 8.3%;
