Wageningen University is offering a PhD position in the field of nutrition and ageing, focusing on protein and bone health of older adults. The PhD project aims to provide evidence for a beneficial effect of improving protein nutrition on bone health. It comprises two intervention studies in elderly people. The first study will focus on protein metabolism in a clinical setting. It will be carried out in close collaboration with the Hospital 'Gelderse Vallei' Ede. The second study is targeting bone mineral density and makers of bone turnover of patients recovering from a fracture in revalidation settings of Zorgroep Amaris. This second project will be linked to a scheduled trial optimizing the diet of patients in rehabilitation.
Both project will encompass: (i) the development of a full dossier for ethical study approval, (ii) full study conduct, from patient recruitment through data-collection (iii) data-analysis and reporting (iv) collaboration with medical and health care professionals and with Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC).
It is envisaged that insight in nutritional requirements for bone recovery after a fracture will contribute to functional health and quality of life in old age.
Applicants for this PhD position should hold a master degree in a nutritional, biological of medical sciences, ideally with a knowledge of nutritional study designs and data-analysis. Applicants should be strongly interested in the health of elderly people and should be able to work in multidisciplinary projects. Good coaching, communication and writing skills are considered important assets.
