The Soil Geography and Landscape (SGL) group of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is looking for an ambitious high potential colleague to further strengthen our team. Our work relates to physical geography, soil science, pedometrics, geo-information science and geomorphology, and often takes an interdisciplinary approach. We are intrigued by natural and anthropogenic processes that shape and modify the earth surface, how these processes interact in time and space, and what their combined effects are. We develop and apply novel methods and models to obtain quantitative understanding of the soil-landscape system. Examples include digital soil mapping, luminescence dating, and soil-landscape evolution modelling. In addition, we perform research on wildfire disturbances, landscape archaeology, and techniques for co-production of knowledge. With our activities we contribute to nature-based solutions to solve the challenges of our time, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, combatting land degradation and sustainable food production.
You will establish an internationally leading research team on a topic that fits the realm of our group and complements our present expertise and research foci. You are free to define this topic, ensuring that it contributes to the SGL mission and boosts the impact of SGL in science, education and society. You will take a leading role in acquisition of research funding to develop your research team. To be successful in acquisition, you will collaborate with colleagues at WUR, researchers from its network as well as your own network. You will act as PI on your theme, carrying out research together with SGL staff and your team existing of externally funded PhDs and post-docs.
You will combine research (~40%) with teaching activities (~40%) and general tasks including acquisition (~20%). You will contribute to the chair group's education program at all academic levels (BSc, MSc, PhD), including its further development. In addition, you will actively support functioning of our group and the Wageningen soil cluster by collaborating with colleagues, co-organizing group social activities, and contributing to the group management. Please note that we simultaneously advertise a position for a lecturer in our group.
- You hold a PhD in soil science, physical geography, geomorphology, or related discipline;
- You have a clear long-term vision on your research topic and how it fits in our group;
- You set high goals for personal achievements, contributing to the group functioning both by individual performance and as a great teammate;
- You have acquired research funding or can demonstrate potential to do so;
- You have strong didactic skills, providing a stimulating learning environment both in class and in the field;
- You are an inspiring supervisor for BSc and MSc thesis students, as well as PhD candidates;
- You have a strong track record of research with demonstrated impact in science and society;
- You have the ambition to help solving global challenges.
ConditionsWe offer you a challenging tenure track career trajectory. From the position of Assistant Professor you can grow into an Associate Professor or a Professor holding a Personal Chair. Of course training and coaching are provided and interdisciplinary (international) collaboration is stimulated. You will also be given the opportunity to build up your own research line. As Wageningen University only selects outstanding candidates to take part in tenure track, this will be an excellent stepping stone to a further career within Wageningen University & Research or elsewhere.
You will get a temporary tenure track contract for 7 years, and offered a permanent position after that provided that you fulfil the tenure track assessment criteria. Your salary before tax will be in the range from € 3.545 to € 4.852, based on full-time employment (38 hours per week), and depending on experience and qualifications. We are an equal opportunity employer and specifically invite applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, gender, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation and age.
