We are looking for a scientist to join our international team of researchers in the field of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The candidate will assist us with the preparation, analysis, and presentation of diverse sets of carbon cycle data. These data are derived from a large European network of monitoring sites that are joined under the umbrella of the Integrated Carbon Observing System (ICOS, www.icos-ri.eu), and analyzed using advanced numerical models like the Dutch CarbonTracker system (www.carbontracker.eu). The candidate is expected to use statistical methods and time series analyses to investigate data quality, to write pieces of code for the analysis of observational and numerical results, to execute numerical experiments on the national supercomputer, to assist in visualizing datasets through web interfaces, and to help create datasets, manuscripts, outreach material, and presentations for a scientific audience. The research is conducted jointly with a team of Dutch scientists and is part of a collaborative effort with the ICOS Carbon Portal, based in Lund, Sweden (www.icos-cp.eu). The candidate will be based at the Meteorology & Air Quality Department of Wageningen University. The position offers opportunities to travel, to engage with other researchers, and to contribute to an important societal and scientific challenge.
We are looking for a candidate with a MSc in atmospheric sciences, computer sciences, mathematics, physics, or equivalent degree. The position requires some background in scientific data analysis, and affinity plus experience with numerical modelling, preferably on unix-like platforms. Prior experience with coding in languages like Python, R, Java, or Ruby is a plus. A good command of the English language is required. An open and collaborative attitude and willingness to engage (inter)national researchers is expected.
ConditionsWe offer a scientist position at MAQ starting as soon as possible, for a period of 2 years. The salary depends on knowledge and experience with a maximum of € 4.084,= (scale 10) per month before tax.

The Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) department contributes to the further understanding of atmospheric processes and their relevance for weather, air quality and climate. MAQ is part of the Environmental Sciences Group (ESG) of Wageningen University. ESG provides academic education and research on our living environment: the atmosphere, soil, water, nature, landscape and land usage. Knowledge is applied for adaptation to climate change, ocean management, competing claims on space, biodiversity and the sustainability of management and production. Wageningen University is part of the Wageningen University and Research Centre. Wageningen University and Research Centre aims to deliver a substantial contribution to the quality of life. Within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society - such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Every day, 6,500 people work on 'the quality of life', turning ideas into reality.
