Functieomschrijving
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is seeking a new Member for its Supervisory Board.
About the Museum
The Van Gogh Museum holds the world's largest Van Gogh collection: 205 paintings, 500 drawings, almost all surviving letters, and extensive archival material. The wider collection includes works from 1840–1920 by friends, contemporaries, and artists who influenced or were influenced by Van Gogh. The Museum also manages a leading collection of late-19th-century printmaking and a significant collection of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints. Through its holdings, the Museum has become the leading centre of expertise on Vincent van Gogh. It runs an active research and publication programme and presents a strong and varied programme of temporary exhibitions. The mission of the Museum is to inspire a diverse public with the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his time. The stewardship of the collection, research, and public engagement are the museum's core tasks.
Supervisory Board member
The Supervisory Board seeks a member with strong expertise in 19th-century art who can engage with the museum about its current challenges and opportunities: academically rigorous, publicly engaged and responsive to a rapidly changing cultural landscape. The new Board member will bring depth in curatorial and art-historical perspective and recognises the importance of aligning the museum's artistic and commercial activities. The Board strives for a balanced composition in terms of age, gender, nationality, experience and cultural background. Its collective expertise includes national-level political or administrative experience, curatorial and museum-sector knowledge, financial and business skills (including ICT), legal expertise, and insight into cultural diversity and intercultural communication. Members of the Supervisory Board are appointed by the Board itself, following consultation with the General Director and after informing the Minister of Education, Culture and Science.
Essential Requirements:
> Preferably strong, recognised expertise in 19th-century art
> Open and knowledgeable engagement with other areas of art history including 20th-century and contemporary art; aware of the Museum's programming
> An active professional in the museum, academic or cultural field who understands the pressures museums currently face
> Insight into public engagement, government and stakeholder relations, and the broader responsibilities of cultural institutions
Key Skills and Qualities:
> Ability to use scholarly and curatorial expertise to frame strategic questions and to translate complex ideas into concepts that are meaningful for a broad public
> Capacity to operate at board level: providing oversight, guidance and challenge rather than managing day-to-day content or operations
> Independent judgement and the confidence to ask clear, critical and constructive questions
> Collegial and collaborative approach
> Strategic mindset, with an appreciation of both cultural value and organisational and financial realities
The role is unremunerated, though costs related to Board participation are covered. Members attend at least four formal Supervisory Board meetings per year, plus a strategy session, participate in committee activities, and attend exhibition openings and key events when possible. The new Board Member is preferably based in Europe, though exceptional candidates elsewhere may be considered.
