Functieomschrijving

Broadening the Liberal Arts and Sciences

The leading idea behind the liberal arts and sciences is that students’ undergraduate education covers both broad and deep learning in a wealth of academic disciplines and skills. UCR is one of the broad liberal arts colleges in the Netherlands, with strong departments in Arts & Humanities, Social Science, and Science. Given the ever-greater influence of technology in our daily lives and in knowledge production, UCR has launched a Department of Engineering in September 2020. UCR is located at the heart of the Scheldt Delta, so issues like sea-level rise, climate change, reductions in biodiversity, the generation of sustainable energy, desalination, pollution, and waste management are key. Engineering courses will focus on high-tech solutions and connect insights from engineering with the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities.

UCR is recruiting faculty for the development and execution of the Engineering major within the Liberal Arts and Sciences context. We are building a team that will revolutionize our tried and tested approach to the Liberal Arts and Sciences by adding a focus on technology to it.

The Engineering major combines discipline-oriented courses with a hands-on interdisciplinary projects approach. We are looking for a colleague who believes that teaching and learning is at the heart of the university, with research experience in a relevant field, and affinity with project-based learning. In this vacancy we are looking for a Lecturer at Assistant Professor level with a PhD in Electrical or Electronics Engineering with an interest in digital electronics, and sensing and control.

Research at UCR is strongly focused on strengthening and innovating teaching and learning. Engagement in more fundamental research is done in association with research institutes at Utrecht University and other universities.

To get the most out of the programme, and realize the student’s capabilities to the fullest, UCR provides every student with a personal tutor. The duties of a Lecturer include tutoring tasks.

Functie-eisen

The ideal candidate has:

  • a PhD in Electrical or Electronics Engineering;
  • teaching experience at University Bachelor's level;
  • excellent English language skills, both written and spoken: at a minimum of CEF-level C1;
  • affinity with Project Based Learning;
  • affinity with the Liberal Arts and Sciences and its approach to teaching.

Conditions

We offer a 3-year appointment (0.8 - 1.0 FTE: 30.4 - 38 hours per week) as an Assistant Professor at UCR in Middelburg. The first year will be a probationary period.
