The group is looking to fill a full-time (0.8-1.0 FTE) Assistant Professor position in the area of renewable energy systems integration to further support the E&R group in developing its multi-disciplinary research and teaching capacity. This includes onshore and (hybrid) offshore renewable energy systems, (zero energy/energy plus) building integration, and local electricity systems integration.
In collaboration with E&R staff predominantly active in renewable energy systems integration, i.e., solar and wind energy, the candidate will further develop the existing portfolio of research in energy systems analysis, with an emphasis on modelling, big data analytics, forecasting, and energy technology analysis. Also, a proven interest in multi-disciplinary research collaboration on other topics within the Pathways to Sustainability program (e.g. circular economy) is an advantage. The candidate will be responsible for managing, developing, and teaching courses for Bachelor and Master of Science programs in the area of renewable energy systems integration.
The appointee will be expected to split her/his time equally between research and teaching next to a small (approx. 5%) contribution to (departmental) management tasks. The candidate holds a PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or equivalent and preferably has a background in system integration of solar photovoltaics, wind energy, energy science in general, mathematical optimization or data analytics applied to the energy sector, or another relevant field. Strong (proven) experience in teaching is essential, especially with focus on teaching modeling and simulation. The candidate has a strong research track record in integration aspects of renewable-rich energy systems, which is demonstrated through publications in peer reviewed literature, and international collaborations in this area. Furthermore, the candidate should be able to acquire research funding from a variety of sources, which is demonstrated by her/his track record in (co)-writing successful research proposals for national and EU calls.
Furthermore the candidate should:
- be motivated in teaching, research and outreach;
- have an interest and experience in topics which matches or complements our research and/or teaching;
- have excellent communication skills;
- be a team player;
- acquire the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) of Utrecht University, if you have not obtained this or a similar qualification yet;
- be able to demonstrate excellent English language proficiency. We require a qualification level of English at C1 level (comparable to level 3 of the Lecturer Assessment Grid) or you should be willing to obtain this level by training.
ConditionsFor the tenure track we offer a temporary position (0.8-1.0 FTE) for six years in combination with a 4-year tenure track qualification programme. Your performance will be subject to annual evaluations as well as an end-term evaluation after 3.5 years. Following a positive evaluation - based on the faculty performance indicators - your employment will become permanent after four years, or sooner depending on the moment you qualify. In case the 3.5-year evaluation is not satisfactory, the contract will be terminated. A continuation after the first four years is only possible for the purpose of compensation of maternity or parental leave or other recognized delays. Further career development to Associate Professor (level 2) is possible, depending on qualification.
The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3,746 and €5,127 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
