Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Distributed and Interactive Systems research group for a talented PhD student, on the subject of User-centered optimization for immersive multimedia systems
The group is looking for a talented and motivated PhD student with an interest on extended reality (XR) technologies and immersive media communication. The student will collaborate with a team of researchers and scientists working on building a real-time capture, encoding and transmission platform for immersive communications. They should be ready to get their hands dirty and understand the importance of team work.
The project will focus on optimizing transmission and rendering of immersive media contents. In particular, the focus is on designing and integrating novel algorithms to improve compression and transmission efficiency of immersive media contents through Quality of Experience (QoE) optimization. Advances in telecommunication systems and innovative network solutions indicate that transmission of immersive media contents will become more widespread in the future, as bandwidth capacity becomes progressively larger. However, since large volumes of data, several orders of magnitude larger than traditional image and video contents, are involved when using immersive acquisition, new algorithmic solutions are needed to efficiently reduce and transmit the data while maintaining the desired perceptual quality. We want to explore how to maximize the QoE for the user, while adhering to the technological constraints. Such optimization can be performed at the acquisition, transmission and rendering stage.
We expect candidates with proven knowledge on at least one of the following areas: signal and image processing, quality of experience for multimedia, deep learning for multimedia, computer graphics, 3D modelling.
Candidates are required to have a master degree in computer science, mathematics, telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, or related fields. Preferable qualifications for candidates include proven research talent in a Master's project, an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.
CWI encourages a diverse workforce: we endeavour to develop talent and creativity by bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together. We recruit and select based on capabilities and talent. We strongly encourage everyone with the appropriate qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical abilities.
ConditionsThe terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The initial labour agreement will be for a period of 18 months. After a positive evaluation, the agreement will be extended by 30 months. The gross monthly salary, for a PhD student on a full time basis, is € 2,407 during the first year and increases to €3,085 over the four year period. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
