As part of the UGY Faculty programme team, the research developers’ tasks include :

  • develop UGY research programmes in collaboration with FSE researchers and research groups and/or institutes
  • develop concrete research proposals
  • develop and maintain Dutch and/or Chinese networks of universities, companies and governments for fundamental and applied research at the UGY
  • advise on the recruitment of academic staff at FSE and the UG,
  • monitor progress and reporting to the faculty and university community
  • monitor and promote the relationship between the various interconnected sub-projects, in close cooperation with all stakeholders
  • completion and evaluation: determine whether project objectives have been met and transfer relevant knowledge and documents to the UG and UGY.

The research developers report to the head of the Faculty’s UGY programme team (the programme manager).


  • doctorate in science or engineering
  • more than five years of research management experience in higher education, preferably in science and engineering
  • very good communication and language skills in Dutch and English
  • intercultural skills
  • team spirit and sense of humour
  • experience with and knowledge of Chinese culture in general and Chinese higher education in particular is a plus, as is experience with similar projects abroad.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary at scale 11 – 12 Dutch Universities (from €3475 up to a maximum of €5405 gross for a full-time position) depending on your qualifications and experience. The University also offers 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
Depending on the results of the programme and the collaboration between the UG and the partners in China, it may be possible to convert the appointment into a permanent contract. Place of employment is Groningen, with the possibility of working at the Yantai campus at a later stage for certain periods of time.

The Faculty
The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) is the largest faculty at the University of Groningen; it has over 1300 academic staff members, 5,000 students and more than 800 PhD students. The Yantai campus
The FSE is currently preparing for the very challenging undertaking of offering and expanding some of its teaching and research at the University of Groningen Yantai (UGY) in China.The UGY is a newly established university; teaching and research activities will start here in 2019.The research is closely interwoven with the first FSE degree programmes to be offered at the UGY:

  • BSc Chemistry
  • BSc Mathematics
  • BSc Industrial Engineering and Management
  • BSc Life Science and Technology
  • MSc Chemical Engineering.

The Faculty is looking for research developers (2.0 fte)) to join its UGY programme team. The research developers will be responsible for designing high-quality research programmes and/or initiate FSE satellite groups at the UGY. They will develop and implement project plans, and will be responsible for raising funds, so that research activities can start in China on time and at the required level, together with the degree programmes.

The FSE programme team performs its tasks in close cooperation with stakeholders both within and outside the Faculty, in the Netherlands and in China. The FSE team consists of six to eight people. The stakeholders in the Netherlands include the Faculty Board, the Faculty degree programmes, research institutes and services, and the central programme organization of the UG. In China, the stakeholders are our academic partner, the China Agricultural University, the city of Yantai, the Shandong province, local businesses and other partners.

A crucial element of the FSE programme is attracting and recruiting highly-qualified staff, both at the UGY in China and the UG in the Netherlands, for the degree programmes and research in the first few years. The FSE requires its UGY researchers to conduct high-quality research as well as fulfil teaching responsibilities.
