The Computer Architecture for Embedded Systems (CAES) group at the University of Twente invites applications for a 4-year PhD position on the topic of "Dependable computing based on emerging architectures and technologies."

We look for a talented and focused researcher with a strong background in digital design and computer architecture who has the ambition to contribute to the introduction of new computing paradigms based on emerging architectures and technologies.
The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr. Ing. Marco Ottavi. During the four years appointment, the PhD student will have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining international exchange programs, to participate in national and international conferences and workshops and to visit other research institutes and universities worldwide.

About the project: Dependable computing based on emerging architectures and technologies:
Current advances of computing architectures and VLSI technology have ushered the so-called digital revolution bringing the ubiquitous presence of embedded computing cores in every aspect of our lives. The need for computing on low power budgets involves new approaches that provide high level of computational power with low power requirements. Moreover, the sheer number of devices makes the introduction of design for reliability techniques quite important as, even with a small probability of faults, the failure of many potentially safety critical devices becomes unavoidable. Furthermore, in most cases, the devices are interconnected in what is called the "internet of things" thus opening them also to potential security related attacks.

The project will investigate novel architectural paradigms that will leverage the availability of open core architectures (such as RISC-V) to create domain specific architectures that will provide low power computing while offering security and reliability. The flexibility of domain specific architectures will enable two main tracks of innovation that will be intertwined. On one side the project will explore new computing architectures, such as for example based on probabilistic data structures, to achieve both reliability and security; on the other side the project will investigate novel computing paradigms enabled by emerging technologies such as computing, and sensing in memory, and power on chip to go beyond the von Neumann architectures.

This project encompasses many possible interesting research activities, the successful candidate will be actively involved in one or more of the following:

  • Study of computing in memory approaches based on emerging technologies and their inclusion in RISC-V based computing architectures.
  • Exploration of the new concept of computing and sensing in memory using emerging technologies and development of RISC-V based computing architectures lo leverage them.
  • Investigation of power on chip computer architectures to include logic directly in photovoltaic arrays using emerging technologies such as memristors based on perovskites.
  • Introduction of techniques to increase reliability of a processor by detecting and correcting errors in the control flow (DUE: detected unrecoverable error) and to prevent exceptions and system hangs/crash.
  • Introduction of techniques to increase reliability of a processor by detecting and correcting errors in the data flow (SDC: Silent Data Corruption) to prevent unintended and potentially harmful execution of the programs.
  • Study of possible design modifications to enhance the security of the RISCV architecture against side channel attacks and against hardware Trojan insertion in the used IP cores.
  • Setup and execution of irradiation campaigns (e.g. neutrons protons or heavy ions) to validate the introduced modifications on the design by implementing the RISC-V architecture using a flash based FPGA in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).
  • Evaluation of dual purpose modifications e.g. for both security and reliability enhancement especially targeting space applications in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Functie-eisen

  • You are an enthusiastic researcher and highly motivated;
  • You have, or will shortly acquire, a MSc degree in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar;
  • You have a strong background on digital hardware design and computer architecture;
  • You have a creative mindset and excellent analytical and communication skills;
  • You have good team spirit and like to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment;
  • You are fluent in English.

Conditions

As a PhD candidate at the department of CAES, you will focus on exciting new design of processors in the emerging arena of dependable computing based on emerging architectures and technologies. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include:
  • A fulltime PhD position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year.
  • Full status as an employee at the UT, including pension and health care benefits.
  • The salary will range from € 2.434 (1st year) to € 3.111,- (4th year) per month, plus a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • A solid pension scheme.

Starting date of the position: as soon as possible, February 2021 at the latest
