The Faculty of Digital Media & Creative Industries (FDMCI) of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) is looking for a Professor to lead the newly assembled Responsible IT research group. The Responsible IT research group is a collaboration between AUAS and the city of Amsterdam and carries out practice-based research in value-based design and development of digital technology, in particular in the public domain.
The Responsible IT professorship is governed by AUAS and the municipality of Amsterdam. It researches, designs and develops software, prototypes and methodologies that do justice to human experience, human agency and public values. To understand the impact of technology on society and to develop technology for everyone, research is conducted in context and in co-creation with citizens, programmers, designers, activists, professionals, civil servants, students and lecturers.
The research group includes researchers in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Quantum Computing, and takes part in the FDMCI Learning Communities in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Responsible Software Development. The professor will formulate and implement the research agenda of the group and translate the agenda into practice-based research, software development and educational projects and activities. S/he operates in the context of the Faculty of Digital Media & Creative Industries (FDMCI) of the AUAS and the Amsterdam Creative Industries Network, and is closely aligned with the educational programmes in communication, multimedia design and computer science. The research outcomes, the process and its methodologies will benefit academics, professionals and society alike, and will lead to the further development of our lecturers and researchers and continuous innovation in our educational curricula.
The professor has a background in computer science, information technology or artificial intelligence. He or she holds a PhD degree in an area that is relevant to the research theme and has a compelling vision on value-based design and development of digital technology. S/he has experience in practice-based research which is supported by an academic and professional track record. The professor is a maker, who combines a deep understanding of the field with hands-on experience with software development and a keen eye for the social and ethical implications of digital technology. In addition, he or she participates in the public debate on the responsible use of technology, has an international network and is recognised as an authority in the field.
The professor has experience with the acquisition of research funding and the related administration. S/he is a team player, capable of inspiring and supporting a diverse group of lecturer/researchers. S/he will work closely together with the other FDMCI professors, the management team and the lecturers / researchers from our educational departments. The professor has a strong vision for applied research in an educational context and actively participates in linking education and research and curriculum development, and develops and disseminates state-of-the-art knowledge, professionalises staff, and helps lecturers and students to gain research skills.
A four-year position, with the possibility of obtaining a permanent position upon satisfactory performance after four years. The activities meet the job description classification for Lector 2, with the possibility of developing into Lector 1. This position of Lector 2 falls under pay scale 15 (CAO HBO, collective labour agreement for universities of applied sciences). The gross monthly salary is a maximum of €7.284,- for a full-time appointment, and depends on the candidate’s education, past performance and experience.
