Functieomschrijving

The University of Groningen, Faculty of Economics and Business, is seeking to appoint a Postdoc researcher in Economics/ Financial Development within the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance from October/November 2021 onwards, for a period of four years.

The Postdoc researcher will be active within the multidisciplinary NWA-SDG project ‘'Improving food and nutrition security by enhancing women’s empowerment' He/she will closely work together with the project leader, Professor Robert Lensink.

We seek a candidate who will study interactions between women's empowerment and Food/nutrition security in Bangladesh and Ethiopia, using experimental and quasi-experimental methods. The candidate will (i) contribute to a conceptual framework that lays out the pathways from women's empowerment to improved nutrition; (ii) contribute to designing new interventions to improve nutrition and food security via women's empowerment and (iii) contribute to testing, and evaluating the relationship between women empowerment and food/nutrition security. The candidate will also play an important role in managing the project.

Candidates have excellent research skills in particular regarding conducting experimental research in developing countries, including randomised controlled trials. Candidates have the ability to conduct original research and to publish in high-ranked international journals. He/she will also have a teaching duty of 30% of a full time position in the Finance, Economics or Econometrics courses of the department.

Functie-eisen

To qualify candidates should have:

• PhD in Economics (preferred fields: development economics; development finance; micro econometrics; behavioral economics; gender studies)
• experience in designing lab and/or field experiments in developing countries
• excellent skills in econometrics/ statistics
• excellent writing skills
• strong abilities to work in multidisciplinary teams
• knowledge of statistical packages (especially STATA}
• a broad knowledge about theories on improving women empowerment in developing countries
• a broad knowledge about theories regarding food and nutrition security in developing countries
• the potential to generate external funding for future research projects
• excellent teaching skills in economics, econometrics and/or finance
• proficiency in English.

Conditions

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

● a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,746 gross per month to a maximum of € 5,127 gross per month (salary scale 11) for a full-time position
● 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees;
favourable tax treatment may apply to non-Dutch applicants
● an appointment for a period of four years

We expect that the candidate starts by October/November 2021.
