working on the project Combining Optics and Acoustics For Real Time Guidance during Cancer Surgery.
The Challenge: The research is carried out in a project funded by the Dutch Science Foundation NWO and the Dutch Cancer foundation KWF. It is a collaboration between the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Amsterdam), the University of Twente and Philips Research.
The project is an effort to develop the next generation of tools for surgical oncology, with real time tissue characterization during surgery. Starting point will an existing method for optical spectroscopy. Your role will be to enhance this method using ultrasound, leading to more accuracy and an enlarged penetration depth.
You will be part of the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente, which is running the European project. You are expected to perform research of high quality, and contribute to making the project a success. You are expected to report on your research in international scientific journals, which will form the basis of your thesis if you apply for the PhD position.
We are looking for a skilled experimentalist with a Master degree or PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering or Applied Physics. Experience with biomedical optics and imaging methods especially ultrasound, photoacoustics or acoustooptics is desirable. Our favored candidate is creative and likes to push boundaries. We expect the candidate to have excellent command of the English language as well as professional communication and team working skills.

For PhD students, the gross monthly salary starts with € 2.222,- in the first year and increases to € 2840,- in the fourth year of your employment.
For postdocs the gross monthly salary depends on experience and qualifications and ranges from € 3111.- to € 4.084.- Additionally, the University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development, a holiday allowance (amount to 8%) and an end of year bonus of 8.3%. For PhD students a high-quality training program is part of the agreement. The research has to result in a PhD thesis at the end of the employment period. The position is immediately available.
