PhD position on project 'Calibrated and in control: Improving students’ self-regulated learning' (0.8 or 1.0 FTE, 5 years)

The Department of Education at Utrecht University offers a PhD position in Educational Sciences/Educational Psychology on the NWO Vici project of Prof. Tamara van Gog. The project seeks to improve adolescents’ self-regulated learning of problem solving tasks (which form an important part of STEM-curricula) by training their self-assessment and task selection skills. Effective self-regulated learning requires students to be ‘calibrated and in control’: able to accurately assess their performance, and decide on an appropriate next task (control/regulate studying). However, this is notoriously difficult, so students need instructional guidance to acquire these skills. We have developed a highly promising ‘social learning’ approach to training self-assessment and task selection skills, and showed it improved adolescents’ self-regulated learning of problem solving tasks. In this Vici project, we seek to further improve this training approach and test its transferability and sustainability. This particular PhD project is focused on improving the training and (ultimately) making it more adaptable to individual differences among students. We will test the effects of social context and feedback interventions aimed at further enhancing self-assessment and task selection accuracy, taking into account students’ self-efficacy and students’ affective responses to the context and feedback. This project will be conducted in close collaboration with schools.
- conducting the research (literature research, designing the experiments, recruiting participants, pre-registering studies, collecting and analysing data, preparing and storing data packages for sharing);
- writing international scientific publications and a dissertation;
- giving presentations at (inter)national scientific conferences;
- actively engaging in outreach activities and disseminating findings to educational professionals and the general public;
- active participation in the local and (inter)national research team involved in this project and in the research team of the UU Department of Education;
- following courses/training (a.o. in the context of Research School ICO, the Interuniversity Centre for Educational Sciences and the local graduate school).
- a Master's degree in educational sciences, educational/(applied) cognitive/social psychology, preferably a Research Master's (completed or nearly completed);
- experience with experimental research and (advanced) statistical methods;
- the ambition to become a high-potential Researcher and conduct excellent scientific research;
- social, organizational, and self-regulatory competencies;
- good communication skills (written and oral);
- proficiency in Dutch and English;
- the ambition to collaborate with schools/teachers;
- ambition to collaborate with (inter)national partners and pay research visits to these partners;
- preferably experience or affinity with psychophysiological measures (these do not necessarily have to be part of this PhD project but could, in collaboration with the Postdoc, become part of the project).
You will be offered a temporary PhD position (0.8 FTE) for 5 years. The initial appointment will be for one year, starting 1 September 2021, with an extension of four years after a positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility. The appointment must result in the completion of a PhD thesis within five years. Extending the appointment for teaching to 1.0 FTE is negotiable. The gross salary ranges between €2,395 in the first year and €3,061 from the fourth year of employment (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
