The newly funded Marie Curie Innovative Training Network NEWAVE (Next Water Governance) will become operational per 1 November 2019. The project will last for four years, and it seeks to push the boundaries of our knowledge on water governance challenges plus proposed solutions, and at the same time train the next generation of water experts (15 Ph.D. researchers) who will become key players in improving the water governance of the future. The project involves 29 partners from all over the globe, including some of the most renowned academic institutions, leading international organizations, NGOs and the public and private sector. We are looking for a Scientific Project Manager, who will work with the Principal Investigators and our partners in running the project. The Scientific Project Manager will assist the Principal Investigators with their network management responsibilities, will coordinate trainings, events and communication, and she or he will play a role in the activities at the interface between policy and science.

The Scientific Project Manager activities under the project will include:

  • Working with the Principal Investigators to develop a detailed planning for the project
  • Help with monitoring progress and taking actions to prevent delays
  • Working with the responsible Project Controller to set up a detailed budget
  • Work with the HR department to developing and implement a hiring strategy for 15 Ph.D. researchers
  • Organizing training schools and multiple other events at various international locations
  • Taking actions to enhance the collaboration and coherence between the project partners
  • Assisting the Principal Investigators in developing a communication strategy in consultation with the VU Communications Department and seeing to its implementation
  • Assisting the Principal Investigators in maintaining contact with the European Union and other stakeholders
  • Representing NEWAVE externally where required
  • Potentially supervising a junior colleague and sub-contractors
  • Potentially being involved in scientific research and publishing.


The successful candidate must have

  • A demonstrated interest in water management issues
  • Proven organizational and management skills
  • Experience in project management / coordination
  • Experience in planning and budgeting
  • Diplomatic and communication skills
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills
  • Collaboration skills
  • A relevant Master’s degree or a Ph.D.degree
  • Optional: experience with scientific publishing

On a full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a maximum gross monthly salary of € 3637 (scale 10.7), depending on your education and experience. The desired starting date for this job is around 1 November 2019. The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a total duration of 4 years.
