The Soil Geography and Landscape (SGL) group of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is looking for an inspiring lecturer. Our work relates to physical geography, soil science, agronomy, pedometrics, geo-information science and geomorphology, and often takes an interdisciplinary approach. We are intrigued by natural and anthropogenic processes that shape and modify the surface of the earth, how these processes interact in time and space, and what their combined effects are. We develop and apply novel methods and models to obtain quantitative understanding of the soil-landscape system. Examples include digital soil mapping, luminescence dating, and soil-landscape evolution modelling. In addition, we perform research on wildfire disturbances, landscape archaeology, and techniques for co-production of knowledge. With our activities, we contribute to nature-based solutions for the challenges of our time, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, combatting land degradation and sustainable food production.
We share our knowledge with students at all levels, with stakeholders and society. Wageningen University is renowned for its education quality, and our group is proud of its excellent education track-record. We mainly contribute to the Soil Water Atmosphere BSc programme and Earth and Environment MSc programme, but also to a wide range of related programmes, such as International Land & Water Management, Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning.
You will ensure an inspiring learning environment for students, by interactive lectures, group exercises, fieldwork and excursions. You will be responsible for several courses of our education portfolio, and take a leading role in updating and developing our courses and teaching methods. You will combine teaching (~80%) with research (~20%) on relevant topics in our domain. You will be involved in PhD supervision, scientific publishing, co-production of knowledge with stakeholders and sharing knowledge with society at large. In addition, you will actively support functioning of our group and the Wageningen soil cluster by collaborating with colleagues, co-organizing group social activities, and contributing to the group management. Please note that we simultaneously advertise a position for a tenure-track assistant professor in our group.
- You hold a PhD degree in physical geography, soil science, or related field;
- You have excellent didactic skills, preferably confirmed by student and/or peer feedback;
- You provide a stimulating learning environment both in class and in the field;
- You have a clear long-term vision on teaching in the domain, and you are able to innovate accordingly;
- You are an inspiring supervisor for BSc and MSc thesis students;
- You have carried out research with impact in science and society, and have the ambition to contribute to solving global challenges;
- You have experience with research and education in lowland landscapes; familiarity with the Dutch soil classification system is appreciated;
- You are a strong communicator in English, and if will be able to speak Dutch within three years after appointment.
ConditionsWe offer you a challenging career trajectory for lecturers (presently under development, details are expected to become available early 2019). As a teacher you will develop your skills, reflected by increased responsibility and an appropriate salary. You will follow a dedicated training and mentoring trajectory, which provides an excellent stepping stone to a further career within Wageningen University & Research or elsewhere.
You will initially be offered a temporary tenure track contract for 7 years, followed by a permanent position, provided that you fulfil the lecturer tenure track assessment criteria. Salary before tax from € 3.303 to € 4.852, based on full-time employment (38 hours per week), and depending on experience and qualifications. We are an equal opportunity employer and specifically invite applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, gender, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation and age.
