Are you interested in understanding and improving electrocatalysts for the sustainable production of hydrogen peroxide from water and oxygen, do you want to work at the interface of fundamental and applied research? Are you holding an MSc degree in either (physical) chemistry or catalysis?

In this project, your role will be to design new catalysts based on non-noble metals and carbon supports by an iterative process in which you relate their performance to their characteristics. You will have to prepare the materials in the laboratory, characterize them by several (spectroscopic) techniques and establish their performance for electrocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide.

The project is funded by the Dutch science foundation NWO within the platform 'ElectroChemical Conversion & Materials (ECCM, )' in which Solvay is the collaborating private partner.

As a PhD candidate, your project entails the following elements:
  • Preparation of materials by different techniques like impregnation and precipitation;
  • characterization by different techniques like IR, TEM, XRD, Physisorption, Chemisorption;
  • establishing the performance of the catalysts;
  • collaborating with membrane scientists and engineers to design a complete system.
The research is embedded within the chair Biobased Chemistry and Technology (www.wur.eu/bct) which is led by Prof. J.H. Bitter (https://www.linkedin.com/in/harrybitter/). You will be co-supervised by Dr. Akbar Asadi (https://www.linkedin.com/in/akbar-asadi-tashvigh-395520164/).


You have:

  • A successfully completed MSc degree in chemistry/chemical engineering;
  • preferably experience in (electro)catalysis;
  • excellent English language proficiency (a minimum of CEFR C2 level). For more information about this proficiency level, please visit our special language page;
  • affinity/experience with chemical laboratory work, i.e. preparation, characterization and performance;
  • technical/engineering skills are a plus.

The gross salary for the first year is € 2.395,- per month rising to € 3.061,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well.
