Functieomschrijving

  • Do you have a strong background in plant genetics and high throughput phenotyping methodology, especially for understanding photosynthesis?
  • Do you want to participate in our team, developing new photosynthesis phenotyping methods and work within the large international program CAPITALISE with 18 international academic and industrial partners and 15 PhDs and Post-docs?
  • Are you enthusiastic, well organized and passionate about plant experimental research?
We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic post-doctoral scientific researcher to work on a project within the EU funded CAPITALISE project. CAPITALISE is a multinational multidisciplinary program that will run until the end of November 2024. It aims to phenotype and genetically map natural occurring variation for key photosynthetic traits in tomato, barley and maize, to understand better the physiology of these traits, and to develop new high throughput phenotyping methods for photosynthetic traits.
You will be applying established high-throughput chlorophyll fluorescence and other imaging methods to phenotype photosynthetic traits in tomato populations designed for GWAS or other methods to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs). The identified QTLs will subsequently be further resolved with the aim to identify the underlying genes. Within CAPITALISE new phenotyping methods will be also developed. You will be expected to contribute to this development, and apply these new methods in your QTL analysis. You will have ample experience with plant physiology research. It is also important that you are enthousiastic about translating the discoveries you will make into useful resources for the plant breeding sector.

You will work with Dr Jeremy Harbinson (Laboratory of Biophysics) and Professor Mark Aarts (Laboratory of Genetics). To be appointed to a post-doctoral grade you must have a PhD. Candidates without a PhD but with the expectation of getting this degree in the near future will be considered for appointment at a reduced pay-scale until they receive their PhD. The duration of the appointment will initially be for a period of 12 months, with the possibility and intention to extend to a maximum of 3.5 years, starting as soon as possible.

Functie-eisen

  • A PhD in plant breeding or genetics, especially with proven expertise in QTL analysis/GWAS and high-throughput phenotyping techniques, and with relevant experience in plant physiology (especially photosynthesis);
  • a strong interest in experimental research;
  • You have experience as a lead writer, for example in your PhD thesis;
  • a collaborative researcher with good communication skills;
  • the willingness to travel for short-term visits to collaborating labs;
  • an interest in translating scientific discoveries into practical solutions;
  • an excellent command of the English language.

Conditions

A challenging position with, depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of €3217,- to a maximum of € 4402,- for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities.
  • An 8% holiday allowance normally paid at the end of May;
  • a structural year-end bonus of 8.3%;
  • excellent training opportunities and secondary employment conditions;
  • flexible working hours and holidays can possibly be determined in consultation so that an optimal balance between work and private life is possible;
  • excellent pension plan through ABP (the Dutch public servants pension scheme);
  • 232 vacation hours, and the option to purchase extra leave;
  • a flexible working time: the option to work up to a maximum of 2 extra hours per week and thereby build up extra leave;
  • an option to design part of your employment conditions to suit your personal needs, such as a bicycle purchase plan;
  • a lively workplace on the Wageningen Campus, where many activities take place and where you can easily make contacts. Education, research and business are present on the Campus;
  • use of the Campus sports facilities.
