The Institute of Political Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is looking for Assistant Professors (3 positions of 1.0 FTE).
Due to growth in our programme, we are looking for candidates who are qualified to teach introductory and advanced courses at the BSc and MSc levels in any one of the following areas:
1. Environmental Politics and Policy. Applicants should be qualified to teach BSc and MSc courses on the national and international politics of environmental protection, as well as general MSc courses on the politics of policy-making and on the politics and methods of policy evaluation. The ability to teach in another sub-field of political science is advantageous but not required.
2. Politics of the Middle East. Applicants should be qualified to teach BSc and MSc courses on Middle East politics at the national and regional levels, in addition to introductory courses in comparative politics, international relations or another sub-field of political science.
3. Politics of Africa. Applicants should be qualified to teach BSc and MSc courses on African politics at the national and regional levels, in addition to introductory courses in comparative politics, international relations or another sub-field of political science.
The institute’s academic staff are all expected to supervise undergraduate and graduate theses, to acquire external research funding, to contribute to the Institute’s research output, and to participate in the intellectual and administrative life of the Institute.
- Applicants must hold (or be near to completing) a PhD in Political Science or a cognate discipline with advanced training in their area(s) of specialisation;
- Applicants should have a promising research agenda and publications in their area(s) of specialisation, plus relevant teaching experience and good teaching evaluations;
- Fluency in English is required; fluency in Dutch at the time of appointment is desirable but not required. Candidates are expected to be able to communicate with staff and students in Dutch within three years of appointment;
- Leiden University requires teaching staff to hold its Basic Teaching Qualification. If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, she/he must obtain it within two years.
The position starts in September 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made on a temporary contract of up to 3 years, depending upon prior experience. A permanent appointment may be possible during or after the term of the initial contract, depending upon performance and the budgetary situation of the Institute. Salary range from €3,475 to €4,757 gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the collective employment agreement of Dutch universities).
