The context:
Interaction Technology combines the fields of computer science, electrical engineering and several social sciences to study how people interact with digital technologies such as virtual reality, speech and language interfaces, the internet of things, and social robots. But also, how digital technologies should be designed and built so that people can have a pleasant and/or effective interaction with the technology. We educate students that can both research, develop and evaluate these systems. The study also reflects an important drive that guides the teachers in their own research: to design with impact.

Interaction Technology is therefore a domain demanding technological expertise coupled with a solid understanding of human behaviour. Besides that, professionals in this domain need competencies to do research, to design and to understand how to create impact and finally, they should know how to tell their story to users, to customers or grant agencies. Our master programme I-Tech was designed to deliver this kind of professional in line with the High-Tech Human-Touch philosophy of the University of Twente.

For I-Tech this translates into educating students to be optimally prepared for a career in an interdisciplinary environment, whether in research or industry. The I-Tech programme aims to combine a scientific mindset with specialist technical knowledge, enabling graduates to analyse, design, validate and implement intelligent interactive systems in their operational context. It uses recent developments in hardware and computational technologies, e.g. wearable interfaces, autonomous cars, interactive playgrounds, etc. The programme focuses on the new engineer: bridging disciplines, understanding users, understanding tech, sharing ideas. To enable this and in line with the requirement of the domain Interaction Technology, the structure of I-Tech was chosen to be based upon six pillars: Technology (1), Understanding humans and context (2), Storytelling (3), Design (4) Research (5) and Impact, innovation and entrepreneurship (6).

The programme is growing and now has an intake of more than 100 students in a year. Our students appreciate the warm, personal and informal atmosphere and the easily approachable lecturers. The study association Proto plays an important role in the contacts between students and programme management.
