The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API) at the University of Amsterdam advertises a postdoctoral position in theoretical high energy astrophysics. The successful candidate will work closely alongside Dr Oliver Porth (who recently joined the API as Assistant professor in computational astrophysical fluid dynamics), his group and with faculty members at API (Anna Watts, Phil Uttley, Sera Markoff and Philipp Mösta). Through participation in the Virtual Institute for Accretion (VIA) further collaboration with Radboud University / Nijmegen (Monika Moscibrodzka, Heino Falcke and Elmar Körding) is anticipated. VIA is part of an inter-university network of the Dutch top institutions for astronomy (NOVA). Research goals represented at VIA are:

  • strong field tests of Einstein GR via Black Hole accretion studies;
  • probing the equation of state of accreting neutron stars;
  • formation of jets and outflows in connection to accretion and large scale feedback;
  • development of spectral timing methodologies across the black hole mass ranges.

Next to outstanding research opportunities along the VIA theme, the applicant will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills as part of the coordination team of the network (funded by 1.5M EUR).

The research carried out at API will focus on GRMHD modeling of accreting stellar mass black holes. Of particular interest are state transitions in X-ray binaries, where recent advances in numerical simulations now allow us to build physically self-consistent simulations of realistic accretion flows and outflows with sufficient dynamic range to predict the key spectral and timing signatures we are directly witnessing in the data. The simulations will provide forward models for advanced X-ray data analysis techniques to map out quantitatively the innermost regions of the accreting compact objects.


Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy and/or physics and a proven track record in (GR)MHD accretion, (non-thermal-) radiative processes or (GR-) radiative transfer.


The appointment is intended for an initial period of 2 years, with renewal for 2 more years contingent upon performance. The start of the appointment is anticipated to be September 2019, with some flexibility.

The salary will be in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,640 to €4,166 (salary scale 10) gross per month (based on a full-time appointment). In addition to this you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end of year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable and includes full social benefits (e.g. parental leave, pension).
